Welcome to a new school year!  I look forward to sharing an exciting and busy year with your son or daughter.  Below, you will find some valuable information to help your child prepare for the months ahead.

While each student is responsible for his or her learning, they all need assistance at times from the adults in their lives.  The establishment of a strong home/school connection is important for students success. As teachers, we provide the opportunities for learning in a classroom environment.  As a parent, you can help in the home environment in a couple of ways.

First, each child in Grade 5 is expected to do approximately 40 – 50 minutes of homework each night. They need a quiet place at home with a chair and table away from distractions.  If your child has no actual assigned work, there are several other things with which they can fill in the hour:  reviewing class notes, ensuring notes are complete and neat, dated, titled and underlined, looking ahead and preparing long term assignments, and reading articles and novels of personal interest.

The second way you can help at home is to regularly read and sign your child’s agenda.  Students are required to record homework, long range assignments, test dates and other relevant information about each class. T his can be a very effective communication tool between school and home.  If your child has worked hard at home but was not able to finish his/her homework within the suggested time period, a note in your child’s planner would be very helpful to me.  If there is homework not completed on time, there will be an “Incomplete Homework Notice” stapled in your child’s agenda.  Please sign the sheet and have your son/daughter complete the unfinished work as soon as possible.

In addition to the agenda, I have a class blog (website) set up!  All homework and information will be on the blog and you will receive regular updates to keep you informed on what is happening in our classroom and school.  I have posted our classroom set-up, class timetable and the subject that will be assessed this year for your perusal, as well.

The address is: http://theparkfiles.blogspot.ca/

You can also get there through a link from our school website: http://www.shdhs.ca/

There is a “subscribe” area where I will enter your e-mail address (and your son/daughter’s e-mail if you don‘t mind) and then everyone will be notified of any new posts that come up. Please check it regularly as I will update the Homework/Agenda on a daily basis!

Participation in extracurricular activities are key characteristics for evaluating student engagement and students’ sense of belonging at school.  Both, engagement and belonging have a significant impact on students’ overall success.  We have many extracurricular activities that we encourage your child to get involved in:  sports (floor hockey, volleyball, basketball, soccer), Student Council, chess club, eco team, Me to We, decorating committees (make the school look beautiful and decorate as per season/events), tech team (prep for any assembly), robotics club, yearbook, and drama club (do any public speaking/skits for assemblies).

For classroom management, the bulletin board at the side of our room shows a modified stoplight with four colours: green, yellow, orange, and red.  Everyone begins each day with “green for go” showing.  Please discuss, sign, and return the discipline plan with your child.

I would appreciate it if you could also complete the parent questionnaire and return it to me as soon as possible.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any concerns or questions about your child’s education. I can be reached electronically at stacpark@fc.amdsb.ca
